The Other Half is an idea in formation
The idea is to create a paper (monthly or bi-monthly) and website devoted to women's issues in Seattle, Washington and the Pacific Northwest. Since this idea is the spawn of a third-wave feminist, the concept of women's issues is very broad. Below is a link to topics and the idea is issues regarding race/ethnicity, LBT issues, class, etc. will be incorporated into every facet of The Other Half. In some ways you could argue that the other half could really be called the other 90% because women's issues are everyone's issues and because women are a part of a larger male-centered society - many discussions will be relevant to men's lives. But no effort will be made to draw connections about how violence against women, domestic violence, child care, education, etc. are also men's issues. This project is about visibility for women in Seattle. There are plenty of gender neutral publications which are all to often male-centered spaces, so there needs to be no apology or excuse for taking separate space when our current resources greatly lack the willingness to articulately discuss or represent women in an equal space, time, or value.
The passion behind The Other Half
Irritated that an overtime victory of the Storm gets buried on page four? Pissed-off about the government's attempt to control women's lives by mandating marriage for welfare? Did it make you sick to your stomach when Mardi Gras in Seattle got out of control and mobs of people let women be sexually assaulted on the street? Did the insanity of it all continue to push you over the edge that the violence somehow slipped through the cracks of outrage in local media? The Other Half is about Mother's who worry about their children being harassed by police officers and providing a voice for acknowledging the legitimacy of this fear. The Other Half is about a voice that refuses to accept that our issues are somehow hysterical or sensitive. The Other Half is about our voice - one that refuses to be muted or marginalized any longer. Look out Seattle because the "Woman Problem" is about to flare up again.
